Using Instant Replay Apps With Switcher

Many Switcher users stream sports and other events where an instant replay feature would be useful for a broadcast or recording. While the Switcher software does not have a built-in instant replay feature, there are many apps and software options such as DelayCam that allow for this functionality. While Switcher has no partnership or correspondence with these instant replay apps, Switcher users are free to incorporate them into their broadcasts via our iOS Screensharing feature!

Below is an easy way to add instant replay to your next broadcast, complete with a cool backdrop 😉

Table Of Contents:

Necessary Equipment And Products

  • Your main switching device (iPad or iPhone with iOS 17.0 or higher) running the Switcher app
  • An iPad or iPhone with iOS 17.0 running your instant replay app
  • An additional device (iPad, iPhone, Mac, or PC) to screenshare in for the backdrop

Preparing Your Instant Replay App For Switcher

  • Open the Switcher app on your device that has your desired instant replay app installed. Do not sign in. Instead, tap Share Camera Or Screen.
  • Tap Share Screen.
  • Tap the white Share Screen button.
  • Tap Start Broadcast.
  • Swipe the Switcher app closed, and open your instant replay app
  • Position your instant replay app on a tripod so it can see the action

Preparing Your Secondary Device For Switcher

If Screensharing In An iPad or iPhone

  • Place your desired backdrop image in the iPad or iPhone's Photos app, but don't open it yet
  • Open the Switcher app, and tap Share Camera Or Screen (just as you did above for the device with the instant replay app)
  • Tap Share Screen
  • Tap the white Share Screen button.
  • Tap Start Broadcast.
  • Swipe the Switcher app closed
  • Open the Photos app, and navigate to your backdrop image so that it is full-screen

If Screensharing In A Mac or PC

  • Place your desired backdrop image on the Mac or PC, but don't open it yet
  • Run the Switcher Cast software on your Mac or PC (or install it, if you have yet to do so)
  • Open a backdrop image that alerts viewers to the Instant Replay status
  • Full-screen the image in your image software

If you don't have a backdrop image available, feel free to right-click and save the example below to use for your own productions!

Setting Up Your Production Space

  • Open the Switcher app on your main switching device, and navigate to the Inputs tab.
  • Tap on your computer's name and your iOS screenshared device's name to add both of those sources into Switcher (NOTE: If you don't see the names listed, tap on Add Source and choose to Connect By URL)

  • Now, tap on the blue button with a "+" sign at the bottom of the Sources window, and choose MultiView
  • Choose 2 Views
  • Select the Picture-In-Picture display (where box B is completely inside of window A)
  • Expand and center source B so it encompasses much of the window
    • For Slot Assignment, choose "Preselect"
    • For Slot A, choose your computer's source with the background graphic
    • For Slot B, choose your iOS screenshared instant replay source

Make any other desired aesthetical choices, and then save the Multiview

Going Live!

It's time to go live! When live, use Switcher as normal to switch between camera sources.

When you wish to use the instant replay feature, tap on your created Multiview to instantly switch to the entire instant replay display, including the backdrop to alert your viewers to what they're seeing!

This allows you to quickly select both sources with the tap of a finger, rather than having to select and setup each one individually every time you wish to show the replay.

Tap on your main sources to show your standard camera angles as needed, and then tap your MultiView again when its time to show the instant replay.
